Overload (2019)
I started to focus on sustainable issue a few years ago, especially in fashion industry. The reason why it is the third-ranked polluting industry is due to unlimited overproduction and over-consumption.Capitalism and utilitarianism control consumers through media. Consumers would pay a high price for chasing fast-changing fashion trends. Added to this, fast fashion assists in minimising the costs of fashion. Consumers pay for fashionable garments that, with serious environmental and sustainable issues, they will abandon quickly. New seasonal clothes would always be waiting for them at low prices. Overproduction and overconsumption have become an endless loop. In this context, I started to research on where do the clothes go after being abandoned. That's why I got interested on shoddy, which is a kind of blended fibre made by tons of discarded clothes.
Both from functionally and aesthetically, shoddy is a good recycled fiber, but the market has a very low utilization rate of it. Thus recycling and upcycling would be essential to this project via redefine the value of shoddy. As the “ash of dead cloth” of the consumers who abandoned it, it would become the means of discussing the value of recycling and upcycling after being resurrected. Due to it's being made from discarded clothing, it would facilitate greater resonance with the audience in terms of reflection and disillusion of over consuming and over producing.

Original shoddy fibre.
At the first stage, IIn the beginning, I use shoddy as a ready-made material . So I felt it with fabric, and receipts or wrap papers that processed with acrylic gel to make a skirt with a sense of design. It's not practical, but it helps me convey a message.“ Focus on overconsumption and the value of recycled materials.” It's also seems to metaphor karma, all the "consumption results" comes to a cloth again then back to human's body.

But that's not enough for expressing what I'm going to say. And maybe treat shoddy as the raw material is more valuable for this project.
